Oh Im so glad your covering this topic, an boy did you do a good job explaining the whole situation. My uncle works as a python hunter now, he volunteers at one of the wildlife centers near the everglades close to where he lives. Being an outdoors man the job suits him well, that and any excuse to zip around in his airboat is just a plus. But dont get me wrong he dose feel for the snakes, but for instance him and hid buddy recently had to pull a mammoth 12 foot (give or take) python that had found its way in to this poor old ladys yard and ate all 9 of her papillions. But one of the cool things they started doing is selling the hides and bones, witch all profits go to the local wildlife center to help fund their efforts.

My school Lego league did something on the Burmese pythons of the Everglades and we thought of something that they're so hard to catch and that during breeding season the males are attracted to the female's hormones and if we can put that hormone that like hormone gland in a male that it could bring the pythons towards that male python and they cannot reproduce so you track down or the older one died Ofnatural causes

Just picked up my 5th burm this past Sunday. I love them. One of mine is huge and I will have to switch her to rabbits. Still, I've heard rabbits can get super-vicious... Could you do a live animal feeding demo with a rabbit (from rabbit hutch to snake cage)? Unfortunately, there are no carefully done demos like this on Youtube. I've been performing somewhat of a public service to my neighbours meanwhile by feeding her stray cats. FYI - there are a ton of strays in our hood and they poo everywhere - more of a pest than squirrels etc. My neighbours have been very grateful - believe me. Unfortunately, I'm now running low on strays (they are not as easy to trap as you'd think). I'm hoping to switch mine from cats to rabbits in the next month or so. I'm not excited about continuing with cats tbh, and want to avoid breeding kittens as I'm told they bury poo everywhere. Plus, cats and are not cost effective to breed and are currently unavailable frozen online, unless I am missing something... Thanks again and nice channel.

I don't think euthanization is necessary except in specific situations where an individual python is targeting humans and domestic animals. They can just spay/neuter and release. The python will die at the end of its life and the species will be eliminated from the Everglades naturally due to not being able to reproduce.

I know they are genetically modifying sterile mosquitos to release in certain areas to curb the population. What if they put genetic traits that are dominant that in some way make them easier to find or make them have smaller clutches or something? Obviously it's more complicated with snakes than insects, but it could help.

Why don’t you just bring the big clutches of eggs to south east Asia instead of bringing the snakes?? Cause if the older snakes have the immunities to certain viruses and could potentially have them, wouldn’t the hatchlings not have those viruses so they wouldn’t be bringing anything back?? And then the hatchlings would end up with immunities to viruses in south east Asia, plz correct me if I’m wrong but it’s just a suggestion

It's really sad that we have to haunt pythons like this. I know they are a problem but I feel like they are incident creatures that dont deserve to die because of s humans faults by releasing them into the wild. People need to learn and do their research that these animals will get big and they are expensive to feed. If you don't have the money, patience or responsibility to take care of an animal like this you shouldn't get one. πŸ’’ thanks to these people we are killing them for no reason. They dont deserve to die.

People blame the burmese pythons for the decline of foxes when the real reason for the decline is more to do with human encroachment in the everglades. The marsh rabbits are suffering to an extent but their population seems to be moving from their normal ranges to disturbed habitat areas as introduced predators aren't so successful there. Most predators in the everglades eat snakes up to the size of yearling burmese pythons which is why the population has not skyrocketed as feared. If they make it past their first year then their biggest predator is humans followed by alligators. The python challenge is really just a way to drum up the fear machine to get funding and awareness and not intended to actually work in terms of removing snakes. I'm against the python challenge because it encourages thousands of people to stomp around in mostly untouched natural environment in pursuit of an animal which has limited negative impact compared to other introduced species. I feel bad for the dedicated python hunters because there just are not enough snakes easily accessible for it to be financially beneficial. They might collect $400 a month and spend $600 in supplies. Hunters for the most part are NOT allowed in Everglades National Park which is where the majority of the snakes are. The researchers in ENP have been pretty successful but they do it for passion of the natural ecosystem. The vast majority of Floridians have not been allowed to be in possession of a burmese python for at least 8 years which probably helps. The permit required to own one is very difficult to get and mainly only the people who had them before the introduction of the conditional species act have them in their care. They are also known by FWC who can visit them randomly to inspect caging. We have much larger issues like with feral dogs, cats, birds, and tegu to name a few. This is of course ignoring humans which are the main cause of pretty much all the issues we currently have with the natural ecosystem.

Excellent video, thank you. Some thoughts on language use in this clip: At various points, Emily refers to 'euthanasia' as well as 'humane euthanasia' of pythons, and both of these represent mislabelling. Etymologically, euthanasia derives from Ancient Greek eu + thanatos = good death. Conceptually, it's difficult to refer to the killing of a flourishing animal as a good death (and, yes, these pythons really do flourish in Florida -- that's the problem after all). Plausibly, a creature can die well only if/once it has exhausted its potential to live well, and the premature death of any creature prevents that, of course. More contemporarily, 'euthanasia' is used to refer to killings that have the purpose of ending pain/suffering. This use doesn't lend itself to the extermination of pythons either, because they don't suffer in the Everglades at all. So why not call it what it really is: killings. Conceptually, we're killing the members of an invasive species (and for various good reasons, as explained by Emily). Once we talk of killing, we can also use the qualifier 'humane': the humane killing of pythons. As long as you use 'euthanasia', qualifying it with 'humane' doesn't really make sense because it seems to me that humane-ness is already part of the concept of euthanasia (when used in the sense of ending pain/misery).

People are saying to kill these pythons.. I don’t think you understand. The Everglades is a tough terrain to kill on, plus the gators are dangerous. Until we find an actual to get through the terrain with out harming the animals that are SUPPOSED to be there, we can’t do much.
