Hey totally cool video! I really liked your explanation of the ABC woes. I have an 02 s55 and haven't dealt with too many ABC woes yet, but glad to know that the accumulators can do this! I replaced the same passenger side mirror housing for my car as well (also black paint) and the part number was UL-22081002649040 so that may help you. Best of luck with it, and looking forward to all the videos!!

The W140 S600 made more power because it had the larger 6 liter V12, whereas the V12 in your S600 is a 5.8. The V12s in the 2003–2006 W220s made 493 because they were a 5.5 liter twin turbo engine. The W221s and onwards have similar V12s to the 5.5s.

'pentosin' I use snowmobile hydraulic fluid. $2.69/quart online. There is an ISO7308 specification and they thus add green dye to indicate the fluid is ISO7308. I just went with 10W fluid with the usual additives. Snowmobile fluid fits the bill with the addition of antifreeze (glycol,) so won't freeze until -50C. Pentosin freezes at -40C.

"car is complicated' It's actually a pretty simple car. The hydraulic suspension throws people off, but I worked with heavy equipment in the military. We'd take our hydraulics right into the mud. I figured that of the thousands of people working on hydraulics everyday, the old hydraulic tech can't be that 'complicated' or that fragile.

Vor 2 Tage
Maurice Searcy
Maurice Searcy

I wouldn't be too hard on Grandpa for having it dealer serviced. I took mine to an independent shop and not nearly as good with them. Mercedes are like a unicorn in an independent shop, so many mechanics are a bit unfamiliar and they also need a Mercedes Workshop account for module programming (module gets replaced and new one needs to be programmed to car's make/market/region.)

Vor 2 Tage
Maurice Searcy

'money pit' It's lemony, but not because of the V12. That V12 is solid. OK, almost: I just ripped the left ignition coil pack off mine because I was yanking all the engine accessories on left side to get at A/C compressor deep down there. Anyway, I pull an original plug and it's gapped to 1.1mm. That's 'factory' spec for pulling from the shelf and throwing in your Honda Civic. Problem is, that car was designed for a gap of 0.8mm. so, instead of the spark jumping the plug gap, it would arc in the coil and destroy it. No one knows this but me. Well, I guess you know now too.

Vor 2 Tage
Maurice Searcy

You have any issues, I know how to fix them. I have the same car and mine was a complete lemon. So lemony that it has a mere 54K miles only and I solved every lemony problem.

The “money pit” mantra 🙄...my ‘02 S500, optioned like yours only without the V12 (didn’t want to deal with V12 ⛽️ or maintenance) has cost not a penny more than my brother’s ‘12 Camry V6 which he financed. He has a Camry. I have a car with features that not even a ‘19 Camry has as OPTIONS!!! You also did well buying a dealer-maintained car. Mine had $10k, mostly in ABC work, done on the “other guy’s” extended warranty 😉. Tip: DIY everything you have time for and can pull off. These are easy cars to work on, even the ABC valve blocks, which a guy in RI is great at rebuilding BTW! BenzWorld.org is your friend.

Vor 3 Tage
Forrest Scott Brinkley
Forrest Scott Brinkley

Maurice Searcy Don’t forget about the valve blocks. I paid a guy in RI ~$500 to rebuild my front one with better-than-new o-rings. Easy to swap in/out. My reservoir also leaked and was replaced by “other guys” warranty 🤑.

Vor 2 Tage
Maurice Searcy
Maurice Searcy

The ABC is cheap to fix. Worst is a strut replacement ($750/pair rebuilt.) Next is the accumulators. Those are $250 for a pair. Finally, the pump is $230 for a reman. My bellows are torn on my struts. They just keep dirt off the strut, but since the strut don't leak, it not worth rebuilding the strut. I just change the fluid a little more to get the dirt out of the oil.

I absolutely love the w220 chassis, it has a special place in my heart too. even though I didnt get the v12 I absolutely love my 03 500 sport. I put a titanium eisenmann exhaust on it and and a few other tasteful goodies but I just love the w220s so much. It was originally my dads car but eventually he gifted it to me but he loved the car so much he immediately bought a 2005 in almost identical spec. Well for some reason he loved the way mine(the 03) drove so much he offered to trade me. Eventually we sold off the 05 but kept the 03 because there was just something special about that particular car. I'll never get rid of it especially since his passing. I'm sorry for your loss but one of the best ways to keep their memory alive is to keep that special car alive. Dad drove the 03 until his final day and I will try to as well

My dream car is a 1997 sl600... right now I drive a 1997 c230 sport. It's completely vacuum powered (none of my family has a car like it) I've learned with these cars is that they usually get handed down due to the previous owner didn't like preventive maintenance and you will end up spending a lot of money getting it back to where a benz should be, but for if you start noticing tranny problems, reset the transmission. As for the engine, I replace spark plugs every 20k miles, air filter every 12k to 15k miles, cabin air filter 15k to 30k miles (depends on how much you use it) tranny and rear diff fluid every 50k. Its is very vital to change those at the same time), and finally change the radiator fluid every 2 years.. I have air ride suspension and its a pain, I can only image what the hydraulic suspension feels like. I also use a can of seafoam for the gas tank every 5k miles with an oil change(mobil 1 is recommended do not use zmax or Lucas ).. 215k miles and my c230 runs like it was just bought. I've learned all my techniques from a friend who owns a 1999 s500. And he has 378k miles on it! I hope you find this useful

+Big Al's Bike & Auto No,you mentioned only once around the 3 minute mark, and only that the gasket had been replaced. Again, the proper repair is to replace the cooler itself,Mercedes does not sell the internal gasket. If only the external gasket was replaced, the internal one will leak in the future and the whole process will need to be repeated.

the w140 s600 is the one before this one, by far one of the most iconic benz ever made. They where built well but the wiring in them tend to desintegrate. These w220 are less reliable because of all the plastic parts used in it. That said, drivetrain is decent, and can hold well if it is maintained properly

I did this with a Lincoln Contenital  for 239.99 by passed the air ride and no problems . Parts and labor was 450.00. Just put standard shocks and struts on it and no more problems. Glad to hear that you were able to get your Grandfather’s car! Personally, I’d prefer the V8 but that was someone else’s decision made along time ago. If the suspension continues to give trouble, just do a coil conversion on it. The purist will hate, but honestly, your not gonna sell it so who cares about resale value? I have done this conversion on an ‘07 S, it was a nice clean job and I really liked it. The ride really isn’t that much difference, and a good kit will come with a module to shut off the warning system on the dash and you won’t have to worry about it anymore. If you ever wanted to, it can easily be converted back.

The car's special to you and you know what you could be letting yourself in for with it, but you also now know someone who knows these cars well and who you trust, based on the ABC work, so it could be cheaper to own than a lot of people think. It's still a pretty special car and not much this side of a Rolls-Royce (which would be a WHOLE LOT more money) is nicer to travel in. So enjoy it and bugger what anyone else thinks. There are a hell of a lot of lesser cars that are just as expensive to own, if not more so, like Audis from the same period...

Owners neglect the shit out of them since repairs are so expensive. And it's not the labor, but the parts the mechanic sources. The mechanic charges 4 times for the same part found online straight from China where almost all the parts for cars are made and pretty much the same.

Vor 9 Tage

+Matt Szurko The thing is, that isn't necessarily true. If you buy an older Merc, say pre-W201 E-Class, they can be super strong and ultra-reliable to ridiculous mileages if they're maintained decently and the parts aren't that hideously expensive if you use good independent suppliers and don't need to go to Mercedes-Benz for the parts, though even those can seem pretty reasonable compared to similar parts for a modern ordinary car. A cheap modern (from the last 20 years or so) Mercedes is likely to be an expensive Mercedes, but even some of these have turned in big mileages without major issues, just not as often as the older stuff. I still reckon the best option for a potential buyer would be a nice W124, though the prices of them are starting to go up so they won't be cheap for much longer. A 190 could be a solid choice too...

WHAT !!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me!!! I couldn’t believe the title of the video when I saw this. I thought for sure you were taking about the Volvo 850 Uber man just picked up. 98$ for two hours labor for a MERCEDES !!! My local specialty shop charges 200$ just to look at a car. I couldn’t be anymore jealous please lmk if you decide to sell it I’ll drive to New England tonight !!!!

You need a cassette adapter so you can play music off your phone. Poor man's bluetooth.

A rechargeable bluetooth cassette adapter too be specific. The cassette door in car conflicts with cord from non-bluetooth adapter.
