Restore Neglected Headlights to BETTER THAN NEW Condition

Hazed and sun-faded headlights are not only unsafe, but they look atrocious. They can make any car that is in good condition, look neglected and abused.
The reason why headlights with polycarbonate (a.k.a. plastic) lenses begin to look cloudy and faded is because the UV resistant coating on the lens has seen some wear and tear due to the constant abuse from road grime, bugs, rocks, dirt, snow, salt, etc. When the UV resistant coating begins to pit, it will expose the bare polycarbonate lens. When that is done, the constant UV rays from the sun will oxidize the composition of the plastic and create the faded, cloudy lens. To repair this problem, sanding the entire headlight is a must so that the failing UV coating that was applied when the headlight was made, is completely removed. You will then need to remove the scratches and the haze from the lens by polishing and restoring it to new condition.
At that point, the headlight will look crystal clear and will be able to allow light through the lens instead of being distorted from the haze. If it is left like that, it will begin to haze again in a matter of no time, especially if you live in an environment where your car will see alot of sun. The best way to prevent the oxidation is from a Paint Protection Film. Since it is a UV resistant film, the sun’s UV rays won’t be able to deteriorate the lens. Not only does the PPF absorb small impacts like rock chips and debris (so the UV coating will not be compromised), but it will be able to be replaced quite easily. I also find that removing the headlights / masking the entire car, is a pain in the butt so that we can paint a layer of clear coat over the lens, which will eventually fade due to the same pitting problem we have with the headlight being at the front of the car.
The exact 3M film I showed in this video can be purchased here (goo.gl/FTzN5P). It is also available in many different sizes. You can purchase the roll to do a custom piece like your headlight, and you can also purchase pre-cut kits for your car by following this link here (goo.gl/psw29p).

Ive been restoring my headlights for years. I didn't use any kit or drill. I just used some sand paper (1000 gritt-5000 gritt), plastic polish, and UV plastic sealer. I initially did the wet hand sanding, plastic polish, and UV plastic sealer. But the UV plastic sealer doesn't last over three months. So I have to touch them up my headlights with plastic polish and UV plastic sealer, every 3 months. Touch up takes less than 5 minutes. But I would love to not have to do this 4 times a year. I never heard of PP film until now.The next time i do a touch up, I'll skip the UV plastic sealer and use PPF. If that lasts at least once a year, that would be great. Thanks. PPF would be great for front and rear bumpers.

Just want to say this was a professionally done video, and your speaking style was clear and very well done. I detail myself and have done restoration countless times on headlights. I love both the video quality and the method of PPF afterwards which is almost a no-brainer but very much a "my god why didn't I think of that" moment for me. Question for you, with the hazing, is 1500grit your go to then right to polishing compound? A lot of methods exist including starting at 800 grit or 1000 grit and moving up to 1500 then 2000. What do you find works the best? I like saving time (i.e. money) with what you did in 1500 grit then 3m compound followed by two-step polish, but just wondering your thoughts?

why do you not trim it down to size before installing....inquiring minds want to know....and oh...it's like window tint for your headlights, but clear. in order to remove my window tint....that is a job....if the stuff peels off so easily...would it not fly away at highway speed.

Milan Mastracci Hi, I am an engineer, and that UV filtering paint protector sounds like a GREAT idea, maybe just the ticket. I will polish 'em up one more time (about 20 min/side), and give it a shot. What kind of longevity do you typically see before they need changing out, given that stones, etc. are not the driving factor? I really like the 5-10 min "fixability" feature.

great video, has reduced my apprehension about attempting this myself. But with drills having variable speeds what speed (give or take) are you using there? or does that dewalt have a setting which is why you used it? I imagine full tilt would burn and pit the lenses.

Yeah, and it will look like crap again in a week after the WD40 has worn off. With that same 'get-er-done' mentality, you can use a saw to cut off the lenses and then they won't ever get foggy again.

What would the process be if you wanted to clean the inside of the headlight, assuming of course you already have separated the lens from the housing. Would it be the exact same process, or is the inside much more sensitive where the exact process wouldn't work?

Cool Vid. I wish all manufacture build glass headlight vs the plastic material. We spent over 30K+ on those luxury vehicles, manufacture needs to at least have the headlight durable that last. I've seen Mercedes-Benz's and BMW with those ugly faded headlights. Sh*T my 300zx have the glass headlight and it's less expensive than those brand I've mentioned.

I'd like to see a PPF video. I used something like that on my headlights and after a while it started to look really bad so I decided to remove it and I couldn't get it off. Parts were peeling off on their own, other parts were stuck so well, they were never coming off and in the end, I wound up buying new headlights. It would be great if you told us how long the film should stay on before removal and then the proper way to remove it.
